Outfield is a boutique landscape architecture studio based in Sydney, specialising in the design of contemporary residential landscapes, swimming pools and outdoor living spaces.
We believe the best landscapes feel effortless. They complement the architecture, respond to the character of the site and become more beautiful over time. Every project is guided by a clear design process, thoughtful detailing and a strong understanding of how people want to live outdoors.
As a boutique practice, every project is personally led by director Hamish Putt—from the initial consultation through to construction documentation and collaboration with builders and consultants. This direct involvement ensures consistency, clear communication and a design outcome that remains true to the original vision.
Whether we are designing a new landscape to accompany a custom home or reimagining an established garden, our goal is always the same: to create outdoor spaces that feel timeless, functional and deeply connected to the people who use them.

Landscape architecture has been an integral part of my life from a young age.
Growing up in New Zealand, I began my journey in a production nursery at fourteen before transitioning into landscape construction a few years later. These formative experiences fostered a deep appreciation for planting and craftsmanship, as well as insights into how landscapes are crafted and evolve over time.
After earning my Bachelor of Landscape Architecture, I relocated to Australia in 2007, where I have worked with leading landscape architecture practices across Melbourne, London, and Sydney. Over more than fifteen years, I have contributed to a diverse range of projects, from boutique landscape architecture for private residential gardens to extensive public landscapes, educational campuses, healthcare precincts, and commercial developments.
In 2020, I founded Outfield to provide a more personal and collaborative design experience that reflects contemporary residential landscapes.
Today, my focus is on creating thoughtfully designed outdoor living spaces where architecture, planting, and outdoor living come together harmoniously. Each project benefits from the extensive experience gained across hundreds of landscape projects while receiving the dedicated attention and involvement that only a small, independent studio can offer.
OUR DESIGN PROCESS
01 - Discovery
Every project begins with a conversation. We discuss your goals, lifestyle, budget and aspirations before visiting the site to understand its opportunities, constraints and surrounding context.
02 - Site Analysis & Concept Design
We develop a clear design direction that establishes the layout, circulation, levels, pool locations, planting structure and overall character of the landscape.
03 - Design Development
The preferred concept is refined through detailed planning, material selection, planting design and coordination with the architectural design and other consultants.
04 - Council Approvals
Where required, we prepare documentation suitable for Development Applications (DA), Complying Development (CDC) and council submissions, coordinating with consultants throughout the approval process.
05 - Construction Documentation
Comprehensive construction drawings and planting documentation are prepared to enable accurate contractor pricing and provide clear direction during construction.
06 - Construction Support
During construction we remain available to assist builders, answer queries, review details and help ensure the completed landscape reflects the original design intent.
